Class of '58 55th Reunion

June 5, 2013

Dear Members of Yale '58:

Herewith a quick report on our 55th reunion. We had a record turnout with superb weather. Linus Travers led us through three days of stimulating events built around the theme of "the new Yale." One of the program highlights was a class panel on current events featuring Jim Hoge, David Greenway, and Scott Sullivan.

We had animated evenings of music and dance with entertainment provided by the Whiffenpoofs, the Eli Chosen Six, and a collection of bawdy songs performed by John Cassel at the piano, Bob Cushman and Joel Schiavone on banjo with Roger Whitcomb accompanying on his inimitable washboard. Bob Morgan (on his bass guitar with vocal accompaniment by his wife Ceci) deserves full credit for pulling together the program.

On Saturday night we held an open meeting of the Class Council with these highlights:

** We confirmed the mandate of the Council:

1)     To sustain the class bonds of friendship; and
2)     To provide opportunities to enjoy one another's company.

** Our class treasurer Steven Riker reported that we continue to be financially healthy with a current balance of over $60,000 in our '58 account.

** Dave Waterbury, our chair of class agents, reported that we are closing in on our $5 million goal. We announced that Dave has agreed to serve one more year in this challenging position.

** We reviewed the class activities that the Council has initiated over the past five years:

We took a moment to thank those classmates who have played a particularly important leadership role for the Council over the past five years:

Under the heading of new business we voted unanimously to renew our award of $3,000 to a Yale sponsored charity in New Orleans, Bulldogs in the Big Easy, which supports the efforts of Yale undergraduates who volunteer in New Orleans during the summer months. Scott Sullivan is the chair of this undertaking.

Because of the great success of our 55th reunion, there is a groundswell of interest in planning a regional mini reunion modeled after our Chicago event. We will keep you posted as these plans unfold.

The next meeting of the Class Council will be held November 2013 after the Yale/Harvard game in New Haven. Details to follow.

Best regards to all,

Timothy L. Hogen, Class Secretary '58
