Class Council Minutes: June 23, 2014

Our Class Council held a teleconference meeting on June 23 to review the '58 activities of the past year and to look ahead to our plans for the coming year.

On the call were Mark Feinknopf, Bill Fitzgerald, Grant Hellar, David Lindskog, Malcolm McDonald, Howard Phelan, Bud Preston, Steve Riker, Joe Sears, Pete Spelman, Georges St. Laurent, Scott Sullivan, Jon Turner, David Waterbury, and Tom Wheeler.

We welcomed Jon Turner as a new member who will be helping Grant Hellar oversee class activities in the Bay Area. We reported that although we will continue to carry Rusty Post on our masthead, he is struggling with Alzheimer's and can no longer participate with us. (Tom Wheeler offered to send us his wife's address so that we can keep in touch with his condition. Rusty has left his home on Orcas Island and has moved to a care facility in the Seattle area.)

We reported on the tremendous success of Anson and Debra Beard's June cocktail reception that they hosted on the roof terrace of their Chelsea apartment in NYC. There were at least 60 in attendance. The wine flowed freely, and the hors d'oeuvres were superb.

The registration mailing for our New Orleans mini reunion has been sent out. The initial response is very strong.

Steve reported that the health of our Class Treasury continues to be robust with a current balance of approximately $70,000 (to be confirmed). We have approved an expenditure of $10,000 to help defray the expense of our New Orleans event. Steve will continue to allocate $25 to a dedicated financial aid fund in honor of each of our deceased classmates.

Tireless Dave Waterbury reported that we are just shy of our dollar goal for the annual giving campaign this year. A last minute effort by our class agent team should close the gap.

We quickly reviewed the class activities of the past year: the '58 reception at Alumni House after the Harvard game; regular class lunches in NYC and Los Angeles and the Beard reception. Two (non Yale) events took place in Los Angeles to honor Linden Blue and Brandon Stoddard.

Scott gave us a current rundown on preparations for our New Orleans mini. Although we will have a full schedule (see mailing), Scott assures us that we will have time to visit with one another. He encouraged us to send in our registrations as soon as possible to help him with a headcount.

Howard reported that the football teams of '56, '57, and '58 will be holding a reunion on September 27 to commemorate our victory over Army so many years ago. The reunion will be organized around the Yale/Army game to be played on that day. Dick Winterbauer, Gene Coker, and Howard are part of the organizing committee. More details to follow, but as many of us as possible are encouraged to attend.

We agreed that we would hold another class reception after the Yale/Princeton game 11/15. We have already reserved Alumni House on York Street for that purpose. The Council was asked to consider other activities that we might hold next year to sustain our class bonds.
